Call it an act of penitence on Disney’s part for tossing Kelly Marie Tran under the bus, or yet another reason for Alan Tudyk to make animal noises for a few hours in return for equity, but Raya and the Last Dragon is just another step in the right direction for the Mouse House. And, by a happy chance, it could just be the studio’s most “unremarkable” film in a long time.
Part Tomb Raider, part The Legend of Korra, Disney Animation’s new feature film tells the mythic tale of Raya, a young woman who embarks on an epic quest to find gleaming McGuffins that will assist her in uniting her world’s five warring tribes. Even though Raya and the Last Dragon’s ‘world’ is rich with lore and vividly detailed, that’s about all you need to know.
