Best Hindi Web Series: India’s web space was growing decently, but in 2021 OTT platforms changed massively. Although content production was relatively lower due to shooting restrictions, the audience spotted OTT content during the pandemic from the safety of their homes.
While the Hindi web series emerged in the country, a fresh wave made us view innovative, interesting content from the Indian web series. Creators today don’t be afraid to think and produce great content and this helps the audience to understand and enjoy the depth of theatres.
1. Scam 1992 (SonyLIV)
This Hansal Mehta series raised the bar for Indian Web content in 2020 and will definitely make a massive difference in the impact of this Pratik Gandhi-led series. In the area where violence and gore are managed to sell like hot cakes, Mehta’s presentation shows that good content needs no dumbness in order to reach the masses. With only a few episodes, Scam in 1992 is trying to draw you fully into the world of the stock market, based on the Harshad Mehta securities scam. Everything has worked in favour, from its theme music through to simplifying technical jargon and even filter choice.
2. Special Ops
This Hotstar Hindi web series is a plus for everyone. Neeraj Pandey’s presented this amazing web series in the lockdown. This starred the excellent actors such as Kay Kay Menon, Karan Tacker, Vinay Pathak, Divya Dutta, Meher Vij among others who are loved by the audience.
3. Mirzapur
A violent and aggressive revenge drama series in hindi in the city of Mirzapur became much more than just the gun and power. With an excellent star cast like Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, Vikrant massey and Divyendu Sharma. This Indian show has been loved by the audience and also is prepping for its season 2.
4. Aarya (Disney+ Hotstar)
The Sushmita Sen-led series was also not did lose in the development of the premise. Just following the start of the first episode, it was apparent that Aarya was a valuable trip and that was true for each episode. Aarya’s cause has also been aided by the layered characterisation and the presence of Sushmita Sen’s screen and the smart use of old Hindi movies.
5. Cricket Fever : Mumbai Indians
IPL over the years has transformed itself into the biggest domestic cricket tournament in the world. Massive player fees, packed stadiums and the inclusion of Bollywood, what’s not there to like about this cricket extravaganza? But, while we’ve only been treated with the action on the pitch, this web series takes us into what goes on off it.
6. Bandish Bandits (Amazon Prime Video)
Bandish Bandits took the audience with total surprise at the time of the web series crime-drama. It took only several episodes to become enthusiastic about this series’ world of classical music. Bandish Bandits stood tall on the shoulders of his tale while the music was a major cornerstone of this display. The series Amritpal Singh Bindra and Anand Tiwari included Sheeba Chadha, Rajesh Tailang, Atul Kulkarni and Naseeruddin Shah. Special additions to the music of Shankar Ehsaan Loy.
7. Kaafir
Based on a real-life story, Kaafir was a mature and bold take on the volatile, heartbreaking Kashmir situation – shared through the lens of a civilian mistakenly held across the border. The Indian web series Kaafir is not just a beautifully woven story, but considering the current socio-political situation, an extremely important one as well – and one that greatly benefits from powerful performances by Dia Mirza and Mohit Raina.
8. A Simple Murder (SonyLIV)
This deliciously dark comedy came as a breath of fresh air. Starring Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, Sushant Singh, Amit Sial, Priya Anand among others, the series took an absurdist approach to its sometimes serious content. For the most part, A Simple Murder was so well done that you couldn’t help but marvel at its writing and performances.
9. Made in Heaven
Undoubtedly one of the best Indian web series to have been produced in recent times, Made in Heaven chronicles the lives, lies, and mistakes of two wedding planners and friends, Tara and Karan. What set the show apart was the nuanced portrayal of issues such as adultery, Section 377, wealth gap, and sexual abuse; along with a very realistic, entertaining and thought-provoking representation of the Indian wedding circus.
10. Flesh (Eros Now)
Another crime drama series, this one was quite traditional in its approach towards good vs evil where, for a change, the protagonist was a good cop fighting hard against crime. Led by an impressive Swara Bhasker, Flesh was quite graphic and gory in its representation of human trade, but with its use of repulsive visuals, the show drove the point home.
11. The Gone Game (Voot)
The Gone Game was filmed during the lockdown and the developers and actors made a special effort. The demonstration was exemplary and better than many displays with all available tools in terms of zoom calls and text message using technologies. While Gone Game wasn’t extraordinary in the story department, it more than made up for it by effectively translating to the screen the paranoia that had consumed us during the coronavirus-induced lockdown.
12. Kota Factory
India’s first black-and-white web series presented a hilariously honest story of the infamous coaching institutes of Kota, and the rat race to clear engineering examinations. With refreshing characters (Jeetu Bhaiya FTW!) and relatable dialogues, the series was a reminder of our school friendships and the fear of entrance examinations.
